Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
